The original name McGeever materialised in Donegal following the movement from the Scottish McIvers to Ireland. It was common for surnames to be changed at times of census as many of the citizens were unable to write. The responsibility for the records fell to the local clergymen or clerk to detail the Head of the Household and all family members. Hence there was no 'correct' spelling of a name. Depending on speech and accent, A McClements could just as easily be a McLamont or even a Clammond.

I am on a mission to investigate the genealogy of my immediate family and will post this here soon, but please feel free to contact me with your own stories.
